Can you trust your neighbourhood? What are the key features of where you live? Neighbourhoods and communities are a key part to growing up, and Potong Pasir is such place. For many of us, Potong Pasir is a key part of our daily lives, considering the fact that it is where our school is located. We often have our meals, take the transport and often go through this area after or before school. But is there more about this place? In this essay, I will be writing about the advantages and disadvantages of living in Potong Pasir, identifying its facilities and evaluating its key features.
Potong Pasir is definitely a place of thriving community. The people here are very friendly and most of the times have a cheerful smile pasted on their face. The key feature of this place is no doubt St Andrew’s Village. From kindergarten to junior college, this place offers an all round education with a high standard. This area also has quite a number of clinics, various shops and a convenient location as it is close to the PIE expressway. No doubt there is a KFC and McDonalds, but coffee shops. Thus there is a range of food and a great contrast between the modern fast food outlets and the old fashioned coffee shops. Potong Pasir is particularly close to public transport and is quite accessible and convenient. The community centre has a study room, music room, dance room, hall, archery room, childcare, student care, conference rooms, basketball court and of course, a fast food outlet. Not to mention, there is a Hindu temple, a mosque and church in the area. The area also has many shops: a Chinese medicine shop, a barber, an accessories shop, a furniture shop, a market and a food court. Potong Pasir is a thriving Singaporean-style community.
But, unfortunately, there are also disadvantages. The small roads harbour a big school, and there are traffic jams. And there is only one bus, 142, that goes through the neighbourhood. The obscene behaviour of childish students angers the residents, as the students use foul language and foolish acts that cause a nuisance. The many outlets can improve on their hygiene and cleanliness. Potong Pasir might also need to renovate its many coffee shops, as their standard of hygiene is not very good. This poses a threat to students as the dirty areas can harbour diseases. There is also a need of sheltered walkways in some areas as students are cut off especially when it is raining cats and dogs. Potong Pasir seems to lack a park, a place where residents can rejuvenate and relax with the surrounding natural environment. A park would greatly increase the ecological health of this area.
Overall, I think Potong Pasir is a good place to live, and that this place has many good advantages and disadvantages but what I find special about Potong Pasir is because people here have a heart of gold. Potong Pasir demonstrates that pretty well and yes, this place is a place of living. Lives are in the making here. No doubt this place will be well remembered as a part of our school life.
