SEC 3 CAMP: EVERY BOY A SPORTSMAN
How would you feel if your home comfort was taken away, your daily urban lifestyle transformed? Well, that’s what happened during the Sec 3 Camp. In this essay, I will describe how the camp fulfils the above strategic trust, explain the camp events and evaluate the outcome.
The sec 3 camp was located near the border of Singapore, at the edge of the coast. Obviously we had to walk outstanding distances every day, waking up at 7 and going to sleep at 12. Our range of activities, from nature searching to rafting, definitely tested our physical and mental strengths in the heat. But all of these not only helped to bond the class together, but to experience the wild side of Singapore. we were always either building, running, walking, climbing, rowing or talking in all of the events for long periods of time. Often this tested our stamina and at the end of the day we were exhausted. It seems like we had 12 hours of PE a day. It clearly fulfilled the above strategic trust.
The events in the camp undeniably needed physical and mental alertness, especially in the nature rumble, which I think was the most unique and challenging event. We had to endure knee deep mud and sewage, waist deep water in a swollen creek and slippery terrain. It was also raining cats and dogs. It was hard for some (who were screaming like girls) when we needed to go into the murky depths of the creek. The others involved building and solving challenges like lifting a bucket without spilling its contents, building a raft, building a catapult( which failed), building a bridge and some icebreaker activities. We also had to do a night walk, blindfolded.
The camp was a neck-breaking experience, one that will be remembered (for some, in a negative way) and a good way to burn some calories. We all were sportsmen, enduring some harsh physical tests in the blazing sun. I guess the camp is just a taste of our national service, bound to be even harder. Overall, I say that the camp was enjoyable in some ways, but the fact that we slept in crowded and hot tents meant that many have not slept despite the backbreaking activities. But it was a good experience.
